500 MHz Initiative
A 2010 Presidential Memorandum directed the Secretary of Commerce, working through NTIA, to collaborate with the Federal Communications Commission to make available a total of 500 megahertz of Federal and nonfederal spectrum over the next 10 years for mobile and fixed wireless broadband use.
This initiative, to nearly double the amount of commercial spectrum, will spur investment, economic growth, and job creation while supporting the growing demand by consumers and businesses for wireless broadband services.

– As Prepared for Delivery –
Good morning and thank you for joining us today. NTIA is pleased to be hosting this 11th Annual International Symposium on Advanced Radio Technologies here at our research and engineering laboratory in Boulder. The agenda for this conference covers issues that are of vital importance to the national debate on spectrum and I look forward to a healthy discussion over the coming days in continuation of the collaboration between government, industry, and academia that has always marked ITS’ activities.
Fact Sheet on Spectrum Plan and Timetable, Fast Track Evaluation
Summary of the two DOC/NTIA reports
1) A Ten-Year Plan and Timetable to make 500 megahertz of Federal and non-Federal spectrum available for wireless broadband use.
An Assessment of the Near-Term Viability of Accommodating Wireless Broadband Systems in the 1675-1710 MHz, 1755-1780 MHz, 3500-3650 MHz, and 4200-4220 MHz, 4380-4400 MHz Bands (President's Spectrum Plan Report)
This report presents NTIA’s analysis of bands under a “Fast Track” review. The report recommends making available, within five years, 115 megahertz (1695-1710 MHz and 3550-3650 MHz) as an important step toward the President’s goal to make 500 megahertz available for wireless broadband within ten years.
