Midwest Region (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan)

April 30, 2024
Envisioning an Equitable, Inclusive, Connected America

TBCP Award

The Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians of the Lac du Flambeau Reservation of Wisconsin began the environmental review work for its $25.6 million broadband infrastructure deployment project. When complete, the project will directly connect more than 2,300 unserved Tribal households and 19 community anchor institutions. The Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians also held a public unveiling of its Tribal-owned Internet Service Provider (ISP), Eighth Fire Communications.

The Forest County Potawatomi Community, Wisconsin (the Tribe), completed their Tribal Broadband Connectivity Program (TBCP) grant activities, which include providing reliable Internet to the Tribe’s large solar arrays. This allows the Tribe to collect data from their solar power in real time, supporting the Tribe’s economic and workforce development capacity in addition to improving the Tribe’s resilience through increased telework capabilities.

Events

TBCP staff assisted in the coordination of Michigan’s Tribal consultations, in Lansing, between the state and the Tribal governments that share continuous borders to ensure Tribal priorities are heard by the state’s broadband office.
