Event: Ethical Data Research Listening Session
WASHINGTON – The Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) will host a listening session in conjunction with a Request for Comment released today to gather feedback on potential ethical guidelines for the use of pervasive data in research.
Pervasive data refers to information about people gathered through online services. While this data can help provide essential insights for informing policy, there is a lack of clarity on how to ensure this research is done responsibly.
NTIA’s Ethical Guidelines for Research Using Pervasive Data Request for Comment (RFC) seeks feedback on how researchers can work with pervasive data in a way that protects individuals’ privacy and other rights. Comments are due January 15, 2025.
The listening session will gather feedback from the public, researchers, academic professionals, civil society, and industry. That feedback, along with written comments, will help inform the potential production of non-binding ethical guidelines outlining principles and best practices for research with pervasive data.
