Privacy Multistakeholder Process: September 2012 Stakeholder-Organized Briefings
At the August 29, 2012 meeting, stakeholders voiced support for holding informational briefings regarding mobile application technology and existing work concerning mobile app privacy. In order to facilitate those briefings, NTIA has canceled the privacy multistakeholder meeting previously scheduled for September 19, 2012. Stakeholders have organized four briefings; the briefings are scheduled for September 13, 2012, September 14, 2012, September 19, 2012, and September 28, 2012.
First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) Board Meeting September 25, 2012
The Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012 created the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) as an independent authority within NTIA. The Act directs FirstNet to establish a single nationwide, interoperable public safety broadband network. The FirstNet Board is responsible for making strategic decisions regarding FirstNet’s operations. The FirstNet Board will hold its first public meeting on September 25, 2012.
Notice on Biannual NTIA/FCC Spectrum Planning Meeting
Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski and Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information Lawrence E. Strickling met on August 29, 2012, to discuss their agencies’ complementary roles with respect to commercial and Federal use of spectrum. The meeting, covering both domestic and international spectrum planning issues of joint interest, is in line with Federal law which directs the agency heads to meet biannually to conduct joint spectrum planning.

Development of Programmatic Requirements for the State and Local Implementation Grant Program To Assist in Planning for the Nationwide Public Safety Broadband Network
NTIA issues this Notice to announce requirements for the State and Local Implementation Grant Program authorized by section 6302 of the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012 (Act). The Notice describes the programmatic requirements under which NTIA will award grants to assist state, local, and tribal governments with planning for a nationwide interoperable public safety broadband network.
Acting Secretary Rebecca Blank Announces Board of Directors for the First Responder Network Authority
Acting U.S. Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank appointed twelve of the nation’s leading experts on public safety and wireless broadband communications to serve on the Board of the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet). FirstNet is congressionally mandated to establish a nationwide wireless broadband network that enables police, firefighters, emergency services personnel, and others in public safety to better communicate with one another during emergencies and use new technology to improve response time, keep communities safe, and save lives.
