Today, the Department of Commerce and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced a 120-day pilot program to curb illegal online sales of unapproved opioids. Under the program, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will work with three domain name registries, Neustar (.us), Verisign (.com, .net) and Public Interest Registry (.org), to suspend the domain names of websites found to be illegally selling unapproved opioids.
Today, NTIA on behalf of the Executive Branch petitioned the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to reconsider its Order and Authorization that conditionally granted license modification applications filed by Ligado Networks LLC. The FCC action permits Ligado to provide terrestrial wireless services that threaten to harm federal government users of the Global Positioning System (GPS) along with a variety of other public and private stakeholders.
Today, NTIA has filed on behalf of the Executive Branch of the United States Government a recommendation that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) terminate and revoke the Section 214 international authorizations of China Telecom (Americas) Corporation (China Telecom) to provide international voice traffic between the United States and foreign countries.

Today, NTIA released the first annual report showing continuing efforts to repurpose parts of the nation’s radiofrequency spectrum to meet the future communications needs of commercial and federal users. The report shows that the United States already leads the world in spectrum available for 5G technology, and is working to more-than-double the radio spectrum available for the next generation of wireless network technology.
Today, NTIA sent guidance to executive branch departments and agencies for reviewing current spectrum frequency assignments, as directed in the Oct. 25, 2018 Presidential Memorandum “Developing a Sustainable Spectrum Strategy for America’s Future.”
Today, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration announced it awarded to Neustar a contract to continue operating the .us registry for 10 years, at no cost to the federal government. The new contract was awarded on June 28, 2019, with a period of performance beginning on August 29, 2019. The .us registry is the official country code domain of the United States and has over two million domain names under management. The usTLD has historically served as a home for American business, individuals, and localities and is managed on behalf of the U.S.

Today, NTIA is announcing a new searchable database of 50 federal broadband programs, spanning a dozen federal agencies with billions of dollars for broadband grants, loans and other resources. The database, created with help of participating federal agencies, fulfills a goal set out in the American Broadband Initiative announced in February to make it easier for community leaders to find federal funding and permitting information.
The U.S. Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) today announced that U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross has appointed 30 outside experts to serve on the Commerce Spectrum Management Advisory Committee (CSMAC). The committee provides advice on a range of spectrum policy and technical issues and is an important forum for developing recommendations aimed at strengthening U.S. global leadership in wireless technology services.

Today, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross conducted the official swearing-in of seven new or re-appointed members to serve on the Board of the FirstNet Responder Network Authority. The Board oversees the activities of FirstNet to ensure that its public-private partnership with AT&T continues to successfully develop, build, and operate a nationwide broadband network that will equip first responders to save lives and protect U.S. communities.
Today, NTIA released comments it received in response to a September 25, 2018, request for comment on a high-level framework for protecting consumer data privacy. We received over 200 comments from individuals, industry associations, companies, civil society, and academics.
NTIA and Verisign have agreed to extend and modify the Cooperative Agreement. These modifications are in line with policy priorities of the Trump Administration. The changes create a new commitment to content neutrality in the Domain Name System (DNS), provide market-based pricing flexibility, and reduce the regulatory burden on Verisign.
